In our latest ‘Getting to Know’ feature we caught up with Becky Horsfall – freelance corporate event manager with over 16 years experience in international events industry, both agency and venue side. Most recently workid as a virtual PA to a Company Director but now launching back into a freelance corporate events career.
Q: In a nutshell, tell us the about your services and the some of the industries you’ve freelanced for?
A: I am an organizer, I love people, spreadsheets, diaries and deadlines. Delegate, speaker and venue management are my areas of expertise. A large part of my experience to date has been working in corporate events for the tech industry, IBM, Microsoft, Dell & Quantum. In the last year I have organized keynote speakers for global education events in Beijing and Shanghai, working with Nio, Airbus and Microsoft.
Q: How did you get started in the events industry?
A: On my gap year before University (1996-97) I worked in Morocco at the University of Alakhawayn (the Kings University) organising student events both on and off campus. This included arranging international music events, sporting programs and a trip to a Berber Tribal Wedding Festival.
Q: Most memorable moment working as a freelancer?
A: Working on a team organising the team building element of the Astra Zeneca ONE event in Orlando (circa 1999) being in a room with over 1000 delegates all playing samba instruments in perfect harmony.
Q: Best location you’ve worked at?
A: The Venetian, Las Vegas. My dream location would be organising an exclusive event on Necker Island.
Q: If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself when you first started out in the events world?
A: People are the most important thing in your career, connect with them, build solid relationships with them, nurture them and remember them. Also enjoy it, it’s a tough job at times but you are fortunate to work in such a dynamic and creative industry, soak it all up and smile!
